Pelindo Officially Lays the First Stone of Clean Water Development and Revitalisation Program in Makawidey Bitung

MAKASSAR, 14 November 2024 - PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) through the company's Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSR) program officially laid the first stone for the construction and revitalisation of a clean water supply system in Makawidey Village, Aertembaga District, Bitung City, North Sulawesi, Thursday (13 November 2024).

The groundbreaking marks the start of one of the strategic programmes that aims to improve the quality of life of the local community through better access to clean water. This project is also part of Pelindo's commitment to support the development of public infrastructure that directly benefits the community, especially in the field of basic needs such as clean water.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by General Manager (GM) of Pelindo Regional 4 Bitung, James David Hukom, HR and General Manager of Pelindo Regional 4 Bitung, Ferdy H, Sijadi, Finance Manager of Pelindo Regional 4 Bitung Burhanuddin, Manager of Miscellaneous Goods Services of Pelindo Regional 4 Bitung Harun Wahab, Makawidey Village Head Elipson Manderos, Human Initiaitive representatives, as well as community representatives and local traditional leaders.

GM Pelindo Regional 4 Bitung James David Hukom revealed that this programme is a tangible manifestation of corporate social responsibility in supporting the welfare of the surrounding community.

‘As a company engaged in logistics and port services, Pelindo not only focuses on developing transport infrastructure, but is also committed to contributing to the social and economic development of the community, one of which is through increasing access to clean water in areas in need,’ he said.

This development and revitalisation project includes the construction of a new water treatment plant (WTP), repair and expansion of the pipe distribution network, as well as the provision of other supporting facilities. With this project, it is expected that more than 300 households in Makawidey Village can enjoy access to safer and better quality clean water.

Makawidey Village Head Elipson Manderos expressed his appreciation and gratitude to Pelindo for their initiative and support for this programme. ‘Clean water is a very important basic need for the community. This project will be very helpful in fulfilling the need for clean water which has been a challenge in several areas, including Makawidey Village. We hope this project can run smoothly and be completed on schedule,’ he said.

The construction and revitalisation of the water supply system in Makawidey is a collaborative programme with Human Initiative which is planned to be completed within 3 months. In addition to providing direct benefits to the community, this project will also improve the quality of sanitation and health, and encourage local economic growth through the availability of adequate clean water.

As part of its sustainability commitment, Pelindo also ensures that this project will be carried out with due regard to the principles of environmental friendliness and sustainable management of natural resources.
