Zanzibar President's First Visit to Pelindo: Open Potential for Maritime Sector Cooperation

Jakarta, 7 September 2024 - PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) or Pelindo welcomed the arrival of Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi at Tanjung Priok Port on 5 September 2024. Previously, President Hussein Ali Mwinyi held a bilateral meeting with President Joko Widodo on 2 September 2024.

During this inaugural visit, in addition to discussing opportunities for synergy between Zanzibar and Indonesia, it was also a momentum to exchange ideas regarding the development and management of the port sector given the similarities between Indonesia and Zanzibar as archipelagic countries.

In line with this, the President Director of Pelindo, Arif Suhartono, in his remarks said that archipelagic countries have their own challenges and opportunities related to connectivity.

‘Ports have an important role in empowering trade, connecting national logistics chains, and enabling distribution on the islands to encourage economic development,’ Arif said.

The President of Zanzibar expressed the potential for cooperation in the port sector which is currently in the development stage.

‘We want to learn the application of excellent port services and look for potential collaboration in the future. We are also grateful for Pelindo's initiation to open opportunities for cooperation in the form of capacity building, where personnel from the Zanzibar port can learn from Indonesia,’ said Hussein.

During this visit, the President of Zanzibar along with several Cabinet Ministers and other delegates who attended, also witnessed the operational implementation of Tanjung Priok Port through the Planning and Control Tower of Tanjung Priok Port, to get an overview of integrated port management in Indonesia.
