MAKASSAR, May 14, 2024 - As one of the Port Introduction Programs, PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 4 Makassar welcomed students from Laniang Makassar Middle School (SMP) in the 7th Floor Multipurpose Room of Pelindo Regional 4 Office in Makassar, Monday (May 13, 2024).
The activity, which was attended by 46 students from grades 7 and 8 with 15 accompanying teachers, was in the context of sharing knowledge and insights about ports, including introducing port functions, recruitment, and work systems at Pelindo, as well as bringing students and accompanying teachers to make a direct visit to the Anging Mammiri Passenger Terminal at Makassar Port.
General Manager (GM) of Pelindo Regional 4 Makassar, Iwan Sjarifuddin said, this program is very important to grow the spirit of learning of students, especially in achieving their goals in the future. "Because it is possible that in the future they are prospective employees at Pelindo."
In addition, he continued, it is also to introduce the function and role of the port in the progress of the region, especially Makassar which is the gateway to central and eastern Indonesia. "In the transportation system, the port is the gateway of an area. If the gateway is big, the region must be good. Conversely, if the gateway is small, it means that the region is still underdeveloped," he said when giving material in front of students and teachers.
Iwan then gave an example of Singapore which is a country with a small area, but is very advanced thanks to the role of its very modern port. As a result, Singapore has become the gateway for the distribution of loading and unloading of merchandise in Southeast Asia, which makes its income very large.
Likewise, the Port of Makassar has high revenue potential because it is the gateway for the distribution of loading and unloading of trade goods for the central and eastern parts of Indonesia. "One example of goods unloaded at Makassar Port is cars, which range from around 8,000 to 10,000 units per month," he said.
This is also in accordance with the function of Pelindo, which is a State-Owned Enterprise (BUMN) whose shares are 100% owned by the state, as an interface between land and sea transportation. "Pelindo provides a field and warehouse for loading and unloading goods, where trucks and ships operate there," he said.
He added that Pelindo not only holds the function of ship, goods and container services. But also passenger services which have officially been merged since 2021. This increases the effectiveness and efficiency of ports nationwide.
